Medicine Visualisation in 3D

Today, we had the chance to be given a presentation of Nader Khalifa’s PhD project, titled “A Visualisation System for Analysing Biomedical and Genomic Data Sets Using Unity3D Platform.”

Nader Khalifa explaining his research

Khalifa is working alongside Westmead Hospital, and has been on the project for over three years.

“We need to realise we have a lot of big data in bioinformatics, such as protein domains and genre clusters,” the PhD candidate explained. “The challenge is to let medical experts analyse these data.”

It is at this point when Khalifa explained his visualisation system. The framework involves data generation, making meaning of the data, and then choosing the suitable visualisation types.

“We decided to use the game engine, Unity3D,” Khalifa added. “I used scatter plots, and took into account that it has interactive features. With this, doctors would be able to find out more about the patient.”
