Visualising Children and Adult Speech

Broadcasting all the way from ANU, Canberra, via Zoom, Jesse Tran presented the talk he did last month for his conference paper at the 21st International Conference on Information Visualisation in London, UK.

“My research is to visualise children and adult speech,” Tran explained. “I aim to show how a child’s speech development changes over time.”

He explained that his data came from linguists who have gone on field trips, recorded conversations of people speaking, annotated them in a software known as ELAN, and then exported them into XML files. Using those XML files, Jesse’s system will then be able to visualise the data.

“I received a lot of positive feedback,” Tran said with a smile. “I am currently over at ANU interviewing other linguists to see how I can potentially improve my system.”

Besides researching linguistics, Jesse is also passionate about making pop beats and hip hop beats that he puts on Gemtracks.
